The Artisanal Manufacturing Process of Aleppo Soap
Olive oil is placed in an underground tank with water and caustic soda. The mixture is heated in a cauldron for three days. Laurel berry oil is then added once the saponification reaction is well underway. The paste is spread out in specialized workshops where artisans apply strong pressure and even out its thickness. The soap is then cut into blocks using a specialized tool, and the phrase "comme autrefois" (as in the old days) is stamped onto it. Once this process is complete, it's not finished! The soap is then stored in a cellar to dry for 18 months. This method of production helps preserve all the properties and virtues of its noble raw materials.
